Wow. I honestly don’t give a shit how Kristen Stewart acts in public. She can be as “twitchy” and “introverted” as she wants to be. The reason why I don’t like those characteristics about her (let’s take twitchy for example) is because that’s how she is on-screen. She’s supposed to be an actress, but she can’t do more than what she does off-screen—generally scowl about and mumble. Whatever, that doesn’t even matter. Here’s the thing:
Kristen Stewart is in no way helping to re-shape gender norms. Okay, maybe off-screen, a little. But I still can’t believe that she actively cares, when the way that she got famous was being Bella in Twilight. Twilight is one of the best examples of awful, degrading, and hurtful (literally) gender roles. Edward left, and now all Bella can do is weep on the floor for months? He bruises and hurts her and she says that’s okay because it was in the “heat of the moment?” She gets pregnant and is reduced to being an incubator for her baby, because that’s what women should really be? Yeah. (In Breaking Dawn, she was shown as being honorable for willing to risk her life/health/sanity for baby. As if, if you didn’t do that, then what kind of mother are you??)
A lot of people might say that oh, it’s just her job, and she didn’t write the book or the movies or whatever. But she is definitely privileged enough to go get another job. It doesn’t change the fact that as long as she is portraying Bella, she is supporting the messages that Twilight sends. No matter if she speaks out about it. There will be tons of girls who won’t give a crap about what she says, or will never hear it, but will see Kristen Stewart as Bella and decide that that’s the kind of woman they should be. Sure, you can say that someone would have had to take that role, and that’s true. I’m not trying to bring down all of Twilight in this little rant. I’m simply saying that Kristen Stewart, of all the women out there, is the last one I would put on a pedestal for breaking down gender norms.
